One of the crown jewels of the Grand River Valley wine region is the South River Vineyards. This estate winery has over 80 acres of vineyards and a gorgeous winery housed in a century old victorian chapel. South River Vineyards was opened in 2002 but the property has been a grape farm for nearly 100 years. The chapel was a Methodist Episcopal Church in Shalersville Ohio that was built in 1892, abandoned in the 1970s it sat vacant for over 30 years. One day the owners of the property of the eventual South River Vineyards just happened to drive by and stop to take a photo of the dilapidated church. The woman who owned the property told them she had plans to eventually demolish the building and informed them they could have it if they moved it off the property. The chapel was painstakingly taken apart piece by piece and moved nearly 50 miles to its current location where it was reconstructed and opened as a winery.

Originally the winery was just the chapel but over the years they have added a patio, wine cave and pavilion with a fireplace. South River Vineyards is located on one of the highest points in Ashtabula County allowing for stunning patio views of the vineyards and some of the best sunset views in northeast Ohio.
